50 Top Albums of 2014 Part 1: #50-41

50. Umphrey's McGee- Similar Skin

The infamous prog-jam rockers return with an impressive collection of tracks which prove that they are more than just a live band. Complete with raging guitar solos and funky basslines, this is modern rock music at its purest form. Key tracks: "Puppet String", "No Diablo"

49. Die Antwoord- Donker Mag

The South African rave-rap trio bring a full on assault of more hardcore ravey chords mixed with the incredibly disturbing appeal of Yolandi Visser and Ninja. Despite the rumored Aphex Twin collaboration (which is actually just a sample of his 92’ song Ageisopolis) on their track “Ugly Boy”, the South Africans manage to prove that they were not just a hipster phase; they are a strong force which refuses to settle down. Key tracks: "Ugly Boy", "Pitbull Terrier"

48. Actress- Ghettoville

Experimental producer Actress’ follow up to 2012’s R.I.P. furthermore explores the strange, hazey minimal style which Actress has made his trademark.  This album presents  very mature sound, one which may take some concentration and multiple listens for the listener to fully grasp. Key tracks; "Rap", "Rims"

47. Daedelus- The Light Brigade

Brainfeeder producer Daedelus aka Alfred Darlington blends beautiful electronic with classical guitar and heavenly vocals to create one of the most interesting and serious albums of the year. Daedelus creates a truly haunting atmosphere, much unlike his previous beat-oriented works. Key tracks: "Onward", "Until Artillery", "Battery Smoke"

46. TokiMonsta- Desiderium

The L.A. beat queen returns with the first release on her new label “Young Art”. Complete with pitch-shifted vocals, catchy melodies, and some complex yet heavy beats, this album sounds much smarter than just another kid in the trap/bass scene.  Key Tracks: "Steal My Attention", "Dusty Stars"

45. Badbadnotgood- III

The Canadian Jazz trio famous for their Odd Future covers comes out in full force for their first full length album. Don’t expect to hear hip-hop though, this album is as close to straight up jazz as you’ll get. However, the genius of Badbadnotgood is their ability to bring jazz to the eyes of hip-hop listeners in an extremely accessible way. Key Tracks: "Can’t Leave the Night", "Differently, Still"

44. Primus- Primus and the Chocolate Factory

Les Claypool’s band of misfits brings them to new extremely weird heights with a collection of covers of the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory soundtrack. Be prepared to be freaked out in the most awesomely psychedelic kind of way. Key Tracks: "Pure Imagination", "Oompa Augustus", "Cheer up Charlie"

43. Skrillex- Recess

Dubstep wonderkid Sonny More brings a surprisingly awesome collection of diverse songs containing his trademark sounds. It’s a relief to hear him mature from his earlier brostep days, while both classic and new fans can find songs to headbang and dance their asses off to. Key Tracks: "Fuck That", "Recess", "Doompy Poomp"

42. Squarepusher & Z-Machines- Music for Robots

The title explains it all- A team of Japanese scientists build a group of robots programmed to play actual instruments, and who did they choose to compose music for these robots to play? None other than Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher himself. In the 5 tracks on this mini-album, the robots rip through some crazy progressive jazz music which transcends the capabilities of mortal beings. While being played by machines, the songs still contain the qualities of Squarepusher’s genius. Key tracks: "Dissolver", "You Endless"

41. Mr. Oizo- The Church

OG bass-heavy producer Mr. Oizo brings forth his first release for Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. This album is like a take on classic dance music through a futuristic lense, if that makes any sense. The tunes are very non-repetitive, and contain a whole array of strange sounds. Not for the weak eared, this album definitely packs a punch. Key Tracks: "Ham", "Machyne"

Album Review- Rustie- Green Language

As far as innovation amongst the modern bass-heavy producer/DJs goes, Glasgow producer Rustie aka Russell Whyte has created his own unique style of bass music which many have tried to duplicate, yet none have done as well. His 2011 debut album Glass Swords packs just as much of a punch as something labeled "EDM", yet it sounds different than anything which would fall under the genre. Then, he went even further and released the adrenaline-filled Slasherr/Triadzz ep which changed the entire "trap" scene and found its way into many big-name DJ sets. Now, after producing three  bangin' tracks on Danny Brown's album Old, Rustie has created high expectations which he has kept up with, but not gone as far beyond them as his fans wanted.

Green Language, Rustie's second album is most definitely a strong effort from him, but sounds very so like a mixed bag much unlike Glass Swords which felt extremely well held together in the shimmering atmosphere that Rustie created. The first four tracks of Green Language succeed in creating a very natural enviroment as if it were taking place in the bayou, but as track five "Up Down" ft. D Double E starts, the albums energy shifts into the club, and stays there for most of the rest of the album. Most of the rest of the album contains features from singers, which is something Rustie is new to. "Attak" (ft. Danny Brown) and "Hate Me" (ft. Gorgeous Children) Seem to work well with Rustie's production, but "Lost" (ft. Redinho) and "Dream On" feature cheesy vocals you would hear on Kiss 108 and change the channel. These two tracks sound very unlike Rustie and definitely take a bit away from the overall album. It would have maybe been better if Rustie had just released the instrumentals without the singers on them. "Raptor" and "Velcro" prove to be the best tracks on the album for what Rustie fans really want; they feature nobody but himself and they have the same magic which drew in so many listeners to Glass Swords. Other songs like "Workshop", "A Glimpse", "Paradise Stone" "Tempest" "Lets Spiral" and "Green Language" all contain amazing atmospheric soundscapes and synths, yet they feel more like interludes rather than structured songs. Nevertheless they are all still interesting to listen to. Overall the songs on this album are not entirely disappointing, it is quite enjoyable, but the album overall seems like it lacks the consistency and effort of Rustie's 2011 debut Glass Swords. If anything, at least give a listen to "Raptor", "Attak", and "Velcro".

Album Review: Porter Robinson- Worlds

So in the recent EDM uprising of the past few years, a notable name has been 22 year old producer/DJ Porter Robinson, who gained popularity for his electro house hits such as "Language". But fast-forward two years later, and the EDM style which Porter was a part of is now something that people associate with molly-induced deaths and cheesy mainstream hits with a lack of originality. So what is someone who wants to be considered a legitimate artist to do when their genre goes down under? you find genres which never became "uncool", and you take some notes from the artists within those genres and figure out how these sounds managed to stay fresh. In Porter's case, he ditched the dying sound he used to be a part of, and gravitated towards sounding like the indie-electronic acts of recent years such as M83, Chvrches, Purity Ring, and Passion Pit. When I heard the first single off this album "Sea of Voices", the M83 influence was undeniable, and as a big fan of Anthony Gonzales I had quite a bit of excitement for this album, but unfortunately Robinson doesn't manage to make this album as exciting or attention grabbing as the acts I mentioned above.

First off, I must say that despite the dull moments of this album, I do give props to Mr. Robinson for creating such a rich production. In a world where he could have made a ton of money off of an album of EDM club bangers, it was a bit of a bold move for him to move to the M83-influenced direction. There are lots of good ideas and layered, detailed productions with rich synths, but the chords oftentimes are just not that interesting, and a lot of the songs tend to go on for too long. I guess for someone who has never listened to the artists who influenced Porter on this album, it would sound very fresh and original, but for those who have, this album often feels full of recycled ideas. Maybe I might be going a little harsh on him, because after all it is a step in the right direction from where he could have gone with this album. Some of the moments where he really shines on here include the 80's sounding "Flicker", "Hear the Bells" (which takes a lot from M83), and "Sea of Voices" (which also sounds like M83, hah). I know it's not professional of me to bring up the same point on how Porter sounds a lot like other artists on here, but the similarities are too obvious to ignore. There are some good ideas on here and some very grand, detailed production, but Porter's lack of originality and personal style take away from how good this album actually could be. If he can define his style some more, I hope to hear some better works from Mr. Robinson in the future.

Album Review: Caribou- Our Love

At Four Tets recent DJ set at the Hudson Project festival, he played Caribou (aka Dan Snaith)'s "Can't Do Without You", the first single from his highly anticipated album Our Love. I had heard the track since it  was released a few weeks earlier, but after hearing it live, I understood  and felt it so much more strongly than before.  It was now clear to me that Caribou is on top of his game, and I was all aboard the hype train for Our Love, which wasn't set to come out until October, but unfortunately has leaked two months early (sorry Dan). Now, when I talk about "feeling" the music, in this case I mean it way more than some bro in a club pumping his sweaty fist in the air saying "I'm totally feeling it man". Snaith pulls off something that is rare in electronic music, here he has managed to create an album of detailed, well-produced, dancey music with such strong emotion that you can feel it deep down. Where does this emotion come from? just look at the second word of the title; it's Love. Seeing as how the main emotion in most electronic music is "Let's Fucking Dance", it may be a bold choice to make an album centered around love, but Caribou does it in such a way that one can want to dance along to it while also thinking about a past relationship in which the music reminds them of.

The album begins with the single "Can't Do Without You" which welcomes you in with lots of warmth as this house-influenced track slowly builds into what one might expect to "drop" into a trance style EDM beat, but thank god it never does. Instead, he doses it in nostalgic synths and filters which carry the listener into absolute bliss for a minute until the wall of sound cuts out to Snaiths haunting last few lines of the song. A perfect opener which leaves the listener engaged and highly anticipating the rest of the album. "Silver" comes next with a trip-hop type beat and vocals which remind me of something that would have been a radio hit in the late 80's and early 90's. The last two minutes of this song especially shine with beautiful melodies and synths. "All I Ever Need" brings a heavy UK club influence and deeeep bass as Snaith sings "I can't take it when you treat me wrong" with a Michael Jackson-like attitude. The album's title track "Our Love" is definitely a highlight, this is where he truly brings the feels out with nothing but the repeated line (you guessed it) "Our Love". The first half of  it is tame and emotional, featuring light synths and distorted vocals, but in the second half the track takes a 360 degree turn into a deep-house garage dancefest very reminiscent of 90's rave music. This is dance music executed extremely well, take notes producers. These first four tracks are no doubt the strongest on the album, but it still manages to carry its weight for the rest of its length. The only one track that sticks out as a sore thumb to me is "Second Chance" which features a female vocalist singing generic lyrics, much unlike the usual style of Caribou. "Julia Brightly" is a nice little tune with a definite influence from UK legends Four Tet and Burial, I just wish it were longer, it has a lot of potential. "Mars" is the closest thing to a club "banger" on here, I can definitely see it being played out on a Friday night, but for some reason I feel like I have heard this song before. The beat is super intense, and the flutes are a nice touch on top. "Back Home" is another incredibly emotional song, and a nice slowed down break from the craziness of the song before it. "Your Love Will Set You Free" is a perfect ender to this love-themed album, and it's probably the closest sounding track to his last album Swim.

There is no doubt that Snaith poured his soul out into this album, and the new direction that he took suits him quite well. But those who are fans of his older, more instrumental music might have to readjust to his change into more club influenced music. But if you are willing to listen to this album with open ears, it is a very rewarding listen which accomplishes the goal of displaying raw emotion through a collage of mostly digital sounds.

Album Rating: 9.1/10

Last night, the Wu-tang clan reunited in full force for a special  tv appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and performed a new track called "Ron O'Neal" off of their upcoming album A Better Tomorrow. Album Review: Shabazz Palaces- Lese Majesty

In 2011, I fell in love with Black Up, Shabazz Palaces first album on  Sub Pop records. The strange, experimental hip hop sound they produced was unlike anything I had ever heard before. For those with no info on who Shabazz Palaces, the group is comprised of Ishmael Butler, formerly Butterfly of 90's rap group Digable Planets (the group who made the hit "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)"), and instrumentalist Tenda 'Baba' Maraire. If you have never listened to Shabazz Palaces before, just be warned, their music takes patient listening skills in order to fully grasp it. It may take a few listens before you can actually "get" this album, which for some might be something to look forward to. Where Black Up leaned somewhat towards more conventional song structures, the groups brand new album Lese Majesty brings the group to even more abstract new heights.Instead of this album being just a collection of songs, the individual pieces transition into one another to create seven different suites. The opening suite made of the first three tracks on the album proves to be the best one on here. "Dawn in Luxor" works as a very grand opener, complete with ambient pads, shoegaze-type guitar, and a ton of reverb and echo(maybe a bit too much) on Ishmaels voice. "Dawn" then transitions perfectly into "Forerunner Foray" which shines with beautiful synths and dreamy backing vocals. The third track "They Come in Gold"  is probably one of the more accessible tracks on here, within it Ishmael really proves himself as a complex MC, using mysterious lines and an intelligent vocabulary. Hip-hop fans will definitely find this one to be a highlight. The second suite contains four very underdeveloped short songs that kind of pass by as filler material, although "Solemn Swears" has some fun lyrics ("I'm very nice like Jerry Rice") and shimmering synths whichmake it a standout, but it's way too short. The third suite contains "Ishmael" which brings the group to its closest point of using a conventional hip-hop beat with scattering hi-hats, and features a cool outro with some amazing production. "Down in the MCM Snorkel" features Ishmael talking about the past and bringing out his inner ego to shoot down any young MCs who think they can step to him. Track 12 "#CAKE" is one of the more strange songs on here, in it Ishmael emphasizes eating cake...okay? It is one of the more straightforward tracks, but it's still quite strange. "Motion Sickness" is possibly my favorite on here, mostly since I feel it is one of the tracks where the vocals are able to be heard clearly, since the other tracks make it difficult to depict Ishmael due to overpowering sounds and an over-usage of echo and reverb. The album's last two tracks making the final suite are quite enjoyable as well, with "Sonic Mythmap for the Trip Back" being a grand closer, full of sonic sounds and distortion. The production on this album is extremely well done, Shabazz Palaces truly has their own sound which no one else can mimic, but if you want to understand the lyrics, I highly suggest using Rapgenius.com to tag along while most of the lyrics get drowned out in sound. Lese Majesty isn't quite as amazing of an album as Black Up, but Shabazz Palaces once again demonstrates that they operate on a path where no one else can tell them what to do. This is not hip-hop nor is it electronic music, it is music which balances nicely in its own little world.

Album Rating: 8.0/10

Happy Birthday to Jerry Garcia

Today I would like to give a big happy birthday shout out to one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Mr.Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead. Jerry brought improvisational guitar playing to a new level and gave birth to the entire Jam Band scene which thrives at music festivals and clubs to this day. If Jerry were still alive today he would be 72 years old. Jerry, if your spirit is out there listening, thank you for all that you did.

Album Review: Rusko- ! EP

When I first heard the short lived phenomenon called "dubstep", British wubmaster Rusko was one of the first producers to bring the genre into America which then flipped the genre into a grimey molly-bro fest and eventually died down. I had a brief phase in high school where I was all about the dubstep, but along with the dying popularity, I guess I matured and realized that a lot of dubstep has little to no depth at all. Despite my dying interest, I actually have maintained an interest in Rusko (along with others such as Skream, Bassnectar, and Pretty Lights). Rusko songs such as "Jahova" and "Woo Boost" strike me as more than just a producer trying to make his bass and synths as dirty & abrasive as possible, Rusko actually knows how to make some awesome grooves. But with the dying out of dubstep, Rusko has gone along and changed his style in order to keep up with the crowd, which I understand. So those looking for just some "grimey drops", the ! EP is probably not where you'll find them- in fact there's hardly no wub wubs or womp womps on this EP at all. Instead of sticking to his old style, Rusko quite obviously borrows bits & pieces of styles from some very prominent artists. Opening track "Like a Boss" draws a lot from the current "future funk" crowd of artists such as Pretty Lights, Gramatik, and The Floozies. The funky basslines and 80s type synths are cool, but the track really doesn't sound like Rusko, in fact it could have been made by any of those artists I mentioned above. The next track "Sunshower" is probably the best track on the EP, I can totally jam out to it, but once again, it doesn't sound like Rusko, but more so like the futuristic sound of retro synth/bass producers like Rustie or newcomer Wave Racer. Track three "My Style" is probably the most annoying song on the EP. With horn-like synths, scattering 808 snares, and a "swagged out" vocal sample, it's basically Rusko trying to be like any typical trap producer. "Happy Chords" once again uses the same style as on "Sunshower", but at least this time Rusko uses a dubstep beat, hooray! On the last track, "Rusko Theme", he imitates another artist moreso than any other of the previous songs on here, and who does he imitate? none other than Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher. "Rusko Theme" uses basically everything Squarepusher did.... complete with  8 bit synths, some slippery slap bass, acid jazz synths, jazzy piano, and a scattering drum n bass beat, its like a Squarepusher song that was never released. Overall, the songs on this EP are not that bad, they are enjoyable, but Rusko.... I like that you're experimenting with new styles but maybe instead of taking a bunch of styles pioneered by other artists and throwing them into a mixed bag, you could work towards a more defined new Rusko sound? maybe?

Album Review: Lone- Reality Testing

Last month, British Producer Matt Cutler released his new album Reality Testing, which was his first since 2012's Galaxy Garden. After hearing the first two singles of the album: "Airglow Fires" and "2 is 8", I was definitely excited to hear what Lone brought with the rest of the album, and he did not disappoint. The first track of the album "First Born Seconds" is exactly how the title sounds, it's like you're a newborn baby coming out of the womb and Lone picks you up and carries you off into a brand new world of endless possibilities. The pads and synths in this short (but sweet) opener set the mood for the rest of this spacey, rhythmic gem of an album. Within the atmosphere Lone creates, he throws in a variety of different beat styles with influences from JDilla-esque hip-hop, to french house and also hints of jazz too. But despite the different beat styles Lone might have on here, he very well manages to hold the album together by the use of his atmospheric trademark sound. Highlights include "Meeker Warm Energy", "Jaded", and "2 is 8"  all of which are straightforward very melodic hip hop influenced beats- much different from Lone's past work, but still executed beautifully. "Aurora Northern Quarter" and "Vengeance Video" throw in jazzy type ride cymbals and pianos, dosed in Lone's signature blissed-out synths., while "Airglow Fires" and "Begin to Begin" lean more towards the dancey  French house style I mentioned earlier. My personal favorite is the albums ender "Cutched Under" in which Lone makes good use of an angelic female vocal sample and a detailed beat with lush synths and apreggios floating everywhere your ears could possibly wander. This song is a perfect way for Lone to end the album; it's as if he has been guiding you throughout the album and now it's time for him to let go of your hand and say "everything will be okay, I believe in you, you'll be fine". As the album ends you will realize you're back on earth and not in space, and you will definitely crave another trip through Lone's unique world which he has created here.

GREETINGS MY PEOPLE

Since this is my first post on here I'm gonna give you all a summary of how this page is gonna go..
I love music, always have, and always will. I love all kinds of music although I do have my favorites. The music i love is typically music which displays  lots of creativity and talent as well. I'm a huge fan of "innovators" rather than those who just sound like everyone else. With this blog I hope to give my viewers a look into the world of music I constantly wrap myself in and (sometimes) obsess over. I want everyone coming here to have an open mind towards the sounds I can bring to you.. After all, music is just endless possibilities of ways to fill up sound waves.
Hope you all can stick with me and enjoy the beautiful sounds that I bring to you.
